Super Bowl 2012: Snacks Predicted to Win Big

The biggest game of the year is upon us again. And this year, shoppers are celebrating it bigger than ever. Shopper spending for the Super Bowl is predicted to be the highest ever this year at $11 billion with shoppers spending money on team gear, electronics, and, of course, food.

Grocers of all types are getting in on the action because as much as this Sunday will be about the game and the commercials – it’s also very much about the food. Even Whole Foods is stepping up and offering shoppers their game day favorites like dips and spreads, pizza and even wings! (photo at right) But we’re seeing a few new favorites emerge. Carrots, anyone?

According to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, Super Bowl Sunday is the largest event for carrot consumption. Carrots see a 25% consumption increase on that day compared to other Sundays. Does this mean that shoppers are moving towards healthier snacks? Not necessarily. Shoppers still plan to snack the day away and load up on their favorites. The WSJ reports that viewers will consume 100 million lbs. of wings – enough to circle the world two times! (photo at left) What are you buying this weekend for Super Bowl celebrations? Are you putting any new items in your cart?
